Chris Gannon: 2023
Salt River Fire Department
Firefighter and Paramedic Chris Gannon was selected as the 2023 United Fire Firefighter of the Year for his extraordinary actions during a catastrophic apparatus collision on April 8, 2022, and for a career defined by experience, resilience, and unwavering commitment to others.
Chris began his fire service career with Rural Metro Fire, later serving with Superior Fire Department and Globe Fire, before joining the Salt River Fire Department, where he has now served for more than a decade. Known as one of the department’s most seasoned medics, Chris has built a reputation for calm leadership, mentorship of younger firefighters, and a willingness to step up whenever needed.
On April 8, 2022, Chris was working a holdover shift when Ladder 294 was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident that was quickly upgraded to a rescue involving a fire department vehicle. Upon arrival, the scene was chaotic and surreal. A rescue unit responding to a medical call had been struck by a semi-truck loaded with gravel, violently separating the cab from the chassis and ejecting it into the roadway.
After knocking down heavy fire, Chris realized the cab was missing. Moments later, he was directed to the wreckage where two firefighters were trapped inside. One firefighter, Brendon Bessee, had been mortally injured. The second, Firefighter/Paramedic Tyler Packer, was unconscious and exhibiting agonal respirations.
With both doors seized and time rapidly running out, Chris recognized that immediate action was the only chance for survival. He initiated extrication, freed Firefighter Packer from the wreckage, and transitioned seamlessly into advanced medical care—maintaining focus and composure despite the emotional weight of treating a fellow firefighter and close colleague. Chris accompanied Packer to the hospital, where his rapid assessment and decisive care proved lifesaving.
Firefighter Bessee tragically lost his life. Firefighter Packer survived and, after extensive recovery, has since returned to full duty. Packer has directly credited Chris’s actions for saving his life.
Chris’s ability to perform under extreme pressure reflects the depth of his experience—not only as a veteran firefighter and paramedic, but also as a United States Marine Corps veteran, a cancer survivor, and a firefighter who has committed himself to mental health, growth, and resilience. His career embodies the balance of Strong Mind, Strong Body, and Strong Heart.
For his courage, professionalism, and selfless devotion to his fellow firefighters, it is with deep respect that Chris Gannon was recognized as the 30th Annual United Fire Firefighter of the Year.
